34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

Mark 8:34–36

We all know what it’s like to deny ourselves. We tell ourselves no all the time. But what or who do you need to say no to in order to follow Jesus? Put another way, what are you saying yes to that equates to saying no to Jesus? Mark insists that the kingdom of God is near. You are not far. You may be one “no to yourself” away from experiencing that kingdom in a way you never imagined. Jesus was correct: It would be a loss indeed if you gained the whole world for a minute and missed the kingdom of God.
